การเปลี่ยน Simple Sentence เป็น Compound Sentence
ถาม : เราจะเปลี่ยนประโยค Simple Sentence เป็น Compound Sentence ได้อย่างไร จงอธิบายมาพร้อมยกตัวอย่างด้วย?
ตอบ : เราทราบมาแล้วว่าประโยค Simple Sentence คือประโยคที่มีกริยาแท้ (Finite Verb) เพียงตัวเดียว ดังนั้นเมื่อต้องการจะเปลี่ยนเป็น Compound Sentence ก็ให้ทำได้โดยการขยายคำ (word) ตัวเดียว ดังนั้นเมื่อต้องการจะเปลี่ยนเป็น Compound Sentence ก็ให้ทำได้โดยการขยายคำ (word) หรือวลี (phrase) ที่มีอยู่ใน Simple Sentence เป็นประโยคขึ้นมา โดยอาศัย Co-ordinate Conjunction (สมสันธาน) คือ And-type, Or-type, But-type, และ So-type อันใดอันหนึ่งเป็นตัวเชื่อม ตัวอย่าง เช่น
Simple Sentence : Besides making a promise, he keeps it.
นอกจากจะให้คำมั่นสัญญาแล้ว เขายังรักษาสัญญาด้วย
Compound Sentence : He not only makes a promise, but also he keep it. (And-type)
เขาไม่เพียงแต่ให้สัญญาเท่านั้น แต่ยังรักษาสัญญาอีกด้วย
Simple Sentence : You must confess your fault to escape being executed.
คุณจะต้องรับสารภาพความผิดของคุณเสียเพื่อจะรอดพ้นการถูกประหาร
Compound Sentence : You must confess your fault, or you will be executed. (Or-type)
คุณจะต้องรับสารภาพความผิดของคุณเสีย มิฉะนั้นแล้วคุณจะถูกประหารชีวิต
Simple Sentence : Notwithstanding his failure, he did not feel sorry.
ทั้งๆที่ประสบความล้มเหลว เขาก็หาได้รู้สึกเสียใจไม่
Compound Sentence : He failed, but he did not feel sorry.
เขาประสบความล้มเหลว แต่เขาก็ไม่รู้สึกเสียใจ (But-type)
Simple Sentence : He didn’t go to work because of his illness.
เขาไม่ได้ไปทำงาน เนื่องจากไม่สบาย
Compound Sentence : He was ill, so he didn’t go to work.
เขาไม่สบาย ดังนั้นเขาจึงไม่ไปทำงาน (So-type)
อนึ่ง ในทำนองเดียวกัน เราก็อาจเปลี่ยนประโยค Compound Sentence เป็น Simple Sentence ได้ ทั้งนี้โดยเปลี่ยน Co-ordinate Clause (คือประโยคที่เชื่อมกันอยู่) อันใดอันหนึ่ง ไปเป็นกลุ่มคำ (Words) หรือ วลี (phrases) ต่างๆ ตามความเหมาะสมของใจความ เช่น
Compound Sentence : He had no money left, and so he was obliged to go away.
เขาไม่มีเงินเหลืออยู่ ดังนั้นเขาจึงถูกบังคับให้หนีไป
Simple Sentence : Having no money left, he was obliged to go away.
เนื่องจากไม่มีเงินเหลือ เขาจึงถูกบังคับให้หนีไป
(เปลี่ยน He had no money left เป็น Participial phrase)
Compound Sentence : He must work hard, or he will not get promotion.
เขาจะต้องทำงานอย่างหนัก มิฉะนั้นแล้วเขาจะไม่ได้รับการสนับสนุน
Simple Sentence : Without working hard, he will not get promotion.
หากไม่ทำงานหนักเข้าไว้ เขาก็จะไม่ได้รบการสนับสนุน
(เปลี่ยน He must work hard เป็น prepositional phrase)
Compound Sentence : He is not only a singer, but also a boxer.
เขาไม่เพียงแต่เป็นนักร้องเท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นนักมวยด้วย
Simple Sentence : Besides a singer, he is also a boxer.
นอกจากจะเป็นนักร้องแล้ว เขายังเป็นนักมวยด้วย
(เปลี่ยน He is………a singer เป็น prepositional phrase)
Compound Sentence : You must turn to the right, and you will find the house of your friend.
คุณจะต้องเลี้ยวขวา แล้วจึงจะพบบ้านเพื่อนของคุณ
Simple Sentence : Turning to the right, you will find the house of your friend.
เมื่อเลี้ยวขวาคุณจะพบบ้านเพื่อนของคุณ (พอดี)
(เปลี่ยน you must turn to the right เป็น Participial phrase)
