ทุกท่านที่สนใจ ภาษาอังกฤษ ทั้งหลาย โปรดทราบว่า ประโยค Noun Clause ที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย that หรือนำหน้าประโยคด้วย that นั้น ถ้าเป็นภาษาธรรมดา (Informal) โดยเฉพาะภาษาพูด (Spoken Language) แล้ว เรามักจะละ that เสมอ เช่น
He says coffee grows in Brazil.
(= He says that coffee grows in Brazil.)
เขาพูดว่า กาแฟปลูกในประเทศบราซิล
I know he’ll return soon.
(= I know that he’ll return soon.)
ผมรู้ว่าเขาจะกลับมาเร็วๆนี้
ข้อยกเว้น : แต่ในกรณีต่อไปนี้ ประโยค Noun Clause จะต้องใช้ that เสมอ จะละไว้ในฐานที่เข้าใจไม่ได้ นั่นคือ
1)เมื่อ that-clause ขึ้นต้นประโยค ต้องใส่ that เสมอ เช่น
That coffee grows in Brazil is true.
ที่ว่ากาแฟปลูกในประเทศบราซิลนั้นเป็นความจริง
That she had decided to be engaged frightened me very much.
ที่ว่าหล่อนได้ตัดสินใจที่จะรับหมั้นนั้นทำให้ผมตกใจมากๆ
2) เมื่อ that-clause เป็นคำซ้อนนามที่อยู่ข้างหน้ามัน (Appositive) ต้องใส่ that เสมอ เช่น
The news that he was murderer is no true.
ข่าวที่ว่าเขาเป็นฆาตกรนั้นไม่เป็นความจริงเลย
His belief that the earth moves round the sun is correct.
ความเชื่อของเขาที่ว่าโลกหมุนรอบดวงอาทิตย์นั้นถูกต้อง
3) เมื่อ that-clause อยู่หลัง it is (หรือ it was) ต้องใส่ that เสมอ เช่น
It is true that the earth moves round the sun.
เป็นความจริงที่ว่าโลกหมุนรอบดวงอาทิตย์
It is impossible that he has done this by himself.
เป็นไปไม่ได้ที่ว่าเขาได้ทำสิ่งนี้ด้วยตัวเอง
