สอนภาษาเอเชียให้เด็กทุกคน: แวนสโตน
เด็ก(ประถม) ปี 1 ทุกๆ คนในออสเตรเลียควรเรียนแมนดาริน (จีนกลาง) หรือภาษาอินโดนีเซียและความถูกสอนถึงปี 12 (มัธยมปีสุดท้าย) ส.ว. Amanda Vanstone กล่าว เมื่อวานนี้ (เป็น) รัฐมนตรีในคณะรัฐมนตรี มาแล้วถึง 11 ปี จนถึงมกราคม ส.ว. Vanstone กล่าวว่า โครงการภาษาแห่งชาติน่าจะมีประโยชน์ต่อออสเตรเลียแก่คนรุ่นหลังๆ ในอนาคต “ถ้าข้าพเจ้าปกครองออสเตรเลีย…ข้าพเจ้าคงจะทำให้เด็กทุกๆ คนตั้งแต่ปี 1 เรียนแมนดารินหรืออินโดนีเซีย คงจะเลี่ยงไม่เรียนไม่ได้และพวกเขาคงต้องเรียนถึงปี 12 มิฉะนั้นพวกเขาก็จะไม่ประสบความสำเร็จในการเรียนภาษา
“เอเชียอยู่ในโลกส่วนที่เป็นของเรา เป็นที่ที่เราตั้งอยู่ เราน่าจะยอมรับความจริงนี้”
ในงานเลี้ยงอาหารกลางวัน โดย Global Foundation ส.ว. Vanstone กล่าวว่า ทุกระดับในสังคมออสเตรเลียจำเป็นจะต้องพยายามมากขึ้นเพื่อเชื่อมกับเพื่อนบ้านในเอเชีย
“ข้าพเจ้ามีความเสน่หาต่ออเมริกาอย่างลึกซึ้ง เขาเป็นพันธมิตรของเราและเป็นไปได้ด้วยว่าเป็นเพื่อนที่ดีที่สุดของเรา เขาและ สหราชอาณาจักร แต่สำหรับข้าพเจ้าแล้ว จีนคืออเมริกาใหม่แต่ไม่ใช่ในแง่ว่าเหมือนอเมริกาแบบ 100 % เลย
แต่จีนเป็นประเทศที่ใหญ่มากเป็นเศรษฐกิจที่ทรงพลังยิ่งใหญ่ด้วยประชากรเป็นพันๆล้าน และข้าพเจ้าคิดว่าเราจำเป็นต้องเปลี่ยนแนวคิดไปในทางที่เรายังไม่ได้มีการยอมรับกัน”
ส.ว. Vanstone ยอมรับว่าความคิดนี้จะยากที่จะเริ่มต้นปฏิบัติให้เป็นความจริงได้

Teach Asian languages to all children: Vanstone
Every year 1 child in Australia should learn Mandarin or Bahasa Indonesia, and be taught it until Year 12, Senator Amanda Vanstone said yesterday.
A Cabinet minister for 11 years until January, Senator Vanstone said a nationwide schools language program would benefit Australia for future generations.
“If I were in charge of Australia … I would ensure that every child from Year 1 was learning either Mandarin for Bahasa Indonesia. There’d be no way around it, and they would learn it all the way through (school), otherwise they just wouldn’t progress.
“It (Asia) is our part of the world, that’s where we sit, why can’t we recognize that”
At a lunch hosted by the Global Foundation,
Senator Vanstone said all levels of Australian society needed to do more to connect with Asian neighbours.
“I have a deep affection for the United States,
They are our ally and probably our greatest friend, they and the United Kingdom. But, for my own part, China is the new America, not in the sense of being an exact facsimile but it is a huge nation, it’s a huge powerhouse economy, with billions of people, and I think we need to change perspective in Australia in a way that we haven’t yet recognized.”
Senator Vanstone conceded her idea might struggle to get off the ground.
