if และ Whether มีความหมายเท่าเทียมกันและในประโยคทั่วๆไปที่เป็น Indirect Question (คำถามโดยอ้อม) เช่น
Anne asked me if I had seen the White House.
= Anne asked me whether I had seen the White House.
แอนถามผมว่า ผมได้เห็นทำเนียบขาวแล้วหรือยัง
The teacher asked me if I had finished my exercises.
= The teacher asked me whether I had finished my exercises.
ครูถามผมว่า ผมทำแบบฝึกหัดเสร็จหรือยัง
อย่างไรก็ตาม whether นั้นนิยมใช้เมื่อผู้พูดมีความเห็นเป็น 2 ทางคือ ให้เลือกเอาอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งในการนี้ whether จึงมักใช้ โดยมี or หรือ or not อยู่หลังเสมอ เช่น
1. I don’t know whether I should go away or stay here.
ผมก็ไม่รู้ว่าจะหนีไปหรือจะพักอยู่ที่นี่ดี
2. She asked me whether I would rather study English or French
หล่อนถามผมว่า ผมควรจะเรียนภาษาอังกฤษหรือฝรั่งเศสดี
3. I don’t know whether he comes or not.
ผมไม่ทราบว่า เขาจะมาหรือไม่
อนึ่ง or หรือ or not บางครั้งจะละไว้เสียในฐานเข้าใจแล้วก็ได้เช่น
I am doubtful whether I can stay with him (or not).
ผมสงสัยว่า ผมจะอยู่กับเขาได้หรือไม่
Ask him whether he can come alone (or not).
ถามเขาดูซิว่า เขาจะมาคนเดียวได้หรือไม่
ข้อสังเกต : ในกรณีต่อไปนี้ ให้ใช้เฉพาะ whether เท่านั้น จะใช้ if ไม่ได้โดยเด็ดขาด นั่นคือ
(1) เมื่อกลับประโยคโดยเอากริยานำไปไว้ข้างหลัง (คือเอา Indirect Question นำหน้าประโยคนำ) กรณีนี้ใช้เฉพาะ Whether เท่านั้น เช่น
Whether this is true or not, I cannot say.
เรื่องนี้จริงหรือเปล่า ผมพูดไม่ได้
(อย่าใช้ : If this is true or not, I cannot say.)
Whether he did it or not, I couldn’t believe.
เขาได้ทำมันหรือไม่ ผมไม่สามารถเชื่อได้
(อย่าใช้ : If he did it or not, I couldn’t believe.)
(2) จะใช้ If ไม่ได้ ให้ใช้เฉพาะ whether เท่านั้น ถ้าไปวางไว้หน้า Infinitive เช่น
My brother hasn’t decided whether to sail or fly to England.
น้องชายของผมยังไม่ได้ตัดสินใจเลยว่าจะไปประเทศอังกฤษทางเรือหรือทางเครื่องบิน
I haven’t known whether to stay here or go away.
ผมยังไม่ทราบเลยว่าจะพักอยู่ที่นี่หรือจะไปที่อื่น
(อย่าใช้ : I haven’t known if to stay here or go away.)
