Yesterday, however, Tunick sang the praises of Melbourne for supporting his latest “temporary installation” and being open-minded enough to give him free rein to commandeer a key city street for his art.

Melbourne’s support enabled him to better his previous record for mass nude modeling, which was 2,500 in Montreal in May.

“I was amazed and surprised that so many showed up – the weather was horrible, “he said.

The volunteers displayed all variety of bodies – old and young. Fat and thin, exhibitionists and the more modest.
“That’s how I get the masses, by inviting everyone, all nationalities, religions, colour and size. Anyone can pose,” Tunick said.

Since 1992 Tunick has convinced thousands to strip off and pose for more than 150 shoots from London to Jerusalem.
His next Melbourne nude sculpture will be on Wednesday, when he plans to gather as many women as possible cover the age of 35 at an undisclosed location.
