All แปลว่า “ทั้งหมด” Both แปลว่า “ทั้งสอง” คำเหล่านี้ ถ้าใช้เป็นคุณศัพท์ไปขยายนามก็ไม่สู้มีปัญหาเท่าไรนัก เพราะเมื่อขยายนามใดก็ให้วางไว้หน้านามนั้นเป็นกฎตายตัวอยู่แล้ว แต่ปัญหามีอยู่ว่าเมื่อมันไปขยาย Pronoun (สรรพนาม) ล่ะ จะมีวิธีการวางขยายอย่างไร หรือว่าวางเหมือนขยายนาม เพราะฉะนั้นเพื่อความเข้าใจง่าย จะขอสรุปให้ง่ายๆดังต่อไปนี้
1) all และ both เมื่อไปขยายสรรพนาม ให้วาง all หรือ both ไว้หลัง Pronoun ตัวนั้น เช่น
We all went home about ten o’clock last night.
พวกเราทั้งหมดกลับบ้านประมาณ 4 ทุ่ม เมื่อคืนนี้
They both can speak French very well.
พวกเขาทั้งสองพูดฝรั่งเศสได้ดีมาก
(all และ both มาขยายสรรพนาม we, they จึงวางไว้หลัง และให้สังเกตไว้ด้วยว่า ต้องเป็นสรรพนามที่เป็นรูปพหูพจน์เท่านั้น จึงใช้ all, both มาขยายได้)
2) ถ้า Pronoun นั้นมีกริยาเป็น Verb to be ให้วาง all หรือ both ไว้หลัง Verb to be อีกทีหนึ่ง เช่น
We are all wrong. พวกเราทั้งหมดผิด (= เราผิดทั้งหมด)
They are both still alive. เขาทั้งสองยังคงมีชีวิตอยู่
Those are all right. เหล่านั้นคือสิ่งที่ถูกต้องทั้งหมด (=ถูกทั้งหมด)
(all, both ปกติวางไว้หลัง Pronoun แต่ถ้า Pronoun นั้นมี Verb to be ก็ให้ย้ายไปวางไว้หลัง Verb to be อีกทีหนึ่งตามตัวอย่างนะครับ)
3) ถ้า Pronoun นั้นมีกริยาตั้งแต่ 2 ตัวขึ้นไปมาผสมกันอยู่ในประเทศเดียว ให้วาง all หรือ both แทรกไว้ข้างหน้ากริยาตัวสุดท้าย เช่น
They have all done well.
พวกเขาทั้งหมดปฏิบัติไปด้วยดี
We have been both living here for over half a year.
เราทั้งสองอยู่ที่นี่เรื่อยมาเป็นเวลากว่าครึ่งปีแล้ว
(all, both วางไว้หน้ากริยาตัวสุดท้ายคือ done และ living เห็นแล้วใช่ไหมจะ?)
